Float Pods | About and FAQs

What to expect during your float session

We recommend eating a snack or light meal prior to floating. You don’t want to hear your stomach growling during your float. It is best to avoid large meals and caffeine as those can take away from the relaxation experience.

Do not shave within 12 hours of your float as micro abrasions from a razor will burn in the pod. We do have ointment available for any cuts you may have to provide a barrier from the salt.

For your first float, you must arrive 20 minutes prior to your appointment and have the paperwork completed.

You will be taken to the float room and given a brief introduction to floating. Then you will have the room to yourself to get undressed and ready to float.

Start by putting in the provided earplugs before you shower and remove makeup with the provided makeup remover wipes. We also have washcloths for removing makeup in the shower.

You will then take a shower where you will wash your hair and body with the products provided. Do NOT use conditioner! This is important because we can’t have oils, lotions, beauty products, etc in our pod in order to help keep the water in pristine condition. Dry your face and apply the provided ointment to any body parts that need protection from the salty water.

Before your float

After your shower, you can get in the pod and close the lid. Lie back and relax! There are neck pillows provided as well as a water bottle and washcloth should saltwater get in your eyes.

There is a light in the pod that you can leave on but we do recommend turning it off. You can also choose to have music playing but again, we recommend the full sensory deprivation experience.

During your float

You will know your floating time is up when the lights turn on. There will also be chimes and/or music. Open the lid and climb out of the pod. Go directly into the shower to remove all the salt using the body wash, shampoo and conditioner (if you choose) provided. Towel off and get dressed.

You may use the bathroom near the float room to put on makeup and blow dry your hair if desired. There is lotion, Q-tips and combs provided as well.

There is also a quiet room down the hall in which you are welcome to relax after your float where you can write in a journal, enjoy tea or water and just relax.

Floating FAQs

What is in the water?

The simple answer? About 1,000 pounds of medical-grade Epsom salt. This solution of Epsom salt (magnesium sulfate) is used to create a weightless suspension of your body but also leaves your skin feeling smooth and rejuvenated. For thousands of years, millions have flocked to the Dead Sea for the relief from pain and muscle aches the salty water provides. Floating provides a modern-day way to experience the same relief.

What is floating like?

Floating is different for everyone and very difficult to describe. You are in a dark, quiet pod filled with skin-temperature water so your senses are not being used. Some people describe the experience as “trippy” while others describe it as an intense relaxation or even dreamlike. Most people have no sense of time while floating. Some people describe visions, enhanced creativity, or feeling in an enhanced meditative state.

First-time floaters often take 10-20 minutes to settle in and get to the point of relaxation so no worries if this happens to you. Also, since your body will be in a weightless, neutral position, those with poor posture may be uncomfortable at first until their body adjusts to neutral. Floating will help with that!

What should I wear?

You will be floating completely naked so nothing! We do not allow swimsuits due to the potential of residue from swimming pools or lakes to damage to the tanks. The room is completely private (make sure you lock the door!).

What should I bring?

We provide most of what you need to float. However, you might want to bring after shower supplies with you such as deodorant and a brush. We do have a hair dryer, lotion and comb for your use. In addition, if you wear contacts, you will want to remove them for your float so bring those supplies.

How do I get in the float pod?

Getting in the pod is much like getting into a bathtub. The bottom is non-slip and the lid closes easily with just one hand.

How often should I float?

You can float as often as you like. Many people like to float weekly. For chronic pain, several times a week can be immensely beneficial. It really depends on your needs.

Can two people float at once?

No, the pod is designed for just one person.

Will I fit?

As long as you are under 7 feet tall and under 500 pounds, you will fit.

Can I float with dyed hair?

You may not float within 7 days of permanent coloring and 21 days for semi-permanent to avoid damage to the tank and to your hair. The water must be running completely clear when you wash your hair or damage will occur to the tank. You will be financially responsible for this damage so don’t risk it! While there is no guarantee that the salt won’t strip some color from your hair, we recommend that you check if the water running through your hair in the shower at home is fully clear. If there is still some color coming out you should wait a couple of more days/showers. Hydrogen peroxide is also used in the sanitation of the pod and although we cannot guarantee it will not impact color, it likely will not.

Can I float with a new tattoo?

We’d recommend allowing at least two weeks after you have received a new tattoo before floating.

Is the pod disability accessible?

People using the pod must be able to get themselves in and out of the pod without assistance. If you do require assistance, you will need to bring someone along to do that as our staff are unable to provide that sort of assistance and there are no bars for support. In addition, the pod is located on the lower level of the building and there is no elevator so people using the pod will need to be able to go down and back up a flight of stairs.

Safety and Precaution FAQs

Are pods sanitary?

The interior of a float pod is exceptionally sanitary with 1,000 pounds of Epsom salt dissolved in the water, which raises the salinity to levels that are inhospitable to bacteria, including microbes and other pathogens.

The solution is sterilized between each session through a process of commercial-grade circulation, filtration and purification using a combination of UV (Ultraviolet Light) and Ozone. No harsh chemicals (Chlorine, Bromine, etc) are used in the solution at our facility. Hydrogen peroxide is also used in the sanitation of the pod.

Additionally, surfaces are disinfected using Puregreen24, a level IV EPA registered “Green” disinfectant containing sliver and citrus nitrate, safe for contact with children and animals.

Can the pod run out of air?

The pod is not air tight and has air circulation so there is no way it could run out of air.

Can I drown?

While it is possible to drown in any pool of liquid, float tanks are much safer than most other bodies of water because they contain a high concentration of salt making you incredibly buoyant. It is impossible to sink in a float tank, and you must exert a conscious effort to turn onto your side or attempt floating face-down. Many people safely sleep while they are floating but we do not recommend purposely falling asleep.

What if I’m claustrophobic?

The pod is fairly large and the top is domed so unless you are extremely claustrophobic, most people are able to float with no difficulty. Also, with the lack of sensory input, it is difficult to feel claustrophobic. You can also leave the top open or place a rolled towel between the pod tank and lid to leave it slightly open while floating.

Can I float while menstruating?

Yes, it is safe to float while menstruating if using proper hygiene. If you are comfortable and can control your menstruation in a swimming pool, then you can do so in a float tank. Women sometimes experience some burning at this time while in the tank so ointment is provided if you want to prevent that.

Can kids use the float pod?

Children as young as four have successfully floated. However, for children under age 13, a parent must stay in the room the entire time. Anyone under the age of 18 will require signed parental consent to use the pod.

Who should not float?

Float tanks are not recommended for some people. Anyone with one or more of the following conditions should not use float tanks:

  • uncontrolled epilepsy

  • drug or alcohol intoxication

  • extreme motion sickness

  • incontinence

  • ear tubes (unless given the OK by a doctor)

  • infectious disease

  • open wounds

  • serious psychological conditions

It is always a good idea for anyone with any medical condition to consult their provider prior to floating. In addition, you may not float if you have had your hair dyed within the past 7 days for permanent or 21 days for semi-permanent as stated in the FAQ regarding hair dye.

What if I fall asleep?

Some people do fall asleep and that is perfectly OK and is rejuvenating. However, to get the full benefits from floating, we do recommend staying awake during your float.

What if I can’t swim?

No need to swim. The water is about 10 inches deep and with the massive amount of salt in the water, it is incredibly buoyant. In fact, the solution in our pod is denser than the Dead Sea!

Do I have to stay in the entire time?

You can get out of the pod anytime you need or want to.
